Before the Storm. David Hayes, 2013.

Friday, September 27th.

The changing of seasons. Changes in direction. Seem to go together. Fall is for me, the best time of the year. A time of gearing down...of contemplation...a time to make changes if need be. A good time of year.

Happy Friday everyone!

Letting go...a little at a time.

Michigan Harvest. David Hayes, 2013

This has been coming for some time actually. I gave myself a taste of it in August. Pulled back...didn't post. Looked...relooked at different ways. Liked what I saw, yet the more I saw, the less I liked...

I've become disenchanted with the increasing "eliteism" and "snobbery" surrounding iphoneography. It's gotten to the point that unless you use certain apps a certain way...or a particular iDevice...that you can't be a member of this tribe. And if you dare think about using any "other" digital technology to create an can't play! All well and good...but I don't want to be a part of this anymore.

Digital technology has made photography the most democratic of all arts. Being of the old school who still loves the smell of fix, I think this is absolutely the way it should be. The flip side to this is the fact that this very same technology has given everyone an easy way to share their "reality" with everyone else...whether you want to see it or not. Have you taken a hard look at the "stats" on the various social sharing sites? The amount of images downloaded everyday is mind boggling!

I am also troubled about the increasing monetarizing of our images by the likes of Facebook, Instagram, and others. One one side, I do believe we should have to "pay to play" yet the fact that I have no choice on how/what/where my images will be used is unsettling.

I guess where I'm going with all of this is that I have decided to slowly let go of all the usual and popular avenues...and to seek out places that are more meaningful and relevant to where myself and my art is going. And perhaps a little less crowded. Should be interesting...I hope you come along for this part of my journey!

Hay Field. David Hayes, 2013
Fall arrived promises to be fall like...warm, crisp air....clear sky. It couldn't have come soon enough...fall. While we had a mild summer, fall is my favorite time of year! Time to put away the bikini's and flip flops...and get out the flannels and boots! (I do admit that I will miss summer's bikinis....)

Hay Field is part of a series I shot up in Michigan this past August. Even though it was at the height of summer, the morning I took this one and the others that I will share this week had a fall feel to it. So when it came time to do my post-shoot work, I had to go with that! I hope you enjoy these.

From The Ashes.

From the Ashes. David Hayes, 2013.

This is the last in the series of three that I've been spotlighting this week. I took a bit of a painterly look for this one. Liked the idea of mixing a grungy image with a more romantic feel. And why not?

I'm not going to give the recipe for this least not here. Instead, I invite you to visit Create Mixed Media's web site where my tutorial on how I created this image has just been posted. (If you do visit CMM, please leave a comment so they know you've been there...and how much you like my work...things like that! Thanks!!)

Everyone have a great weekend...happy Friday!!

Remains of the Day...

Aftermath. David Hayes, 2013.

Aftermath is the second in the series from a impromptu "photo session" I had this past August during our trip to Northern Michigan. Stopping for gas on the way home, we couldn't help but see the burned out remains of a building that appeared to house a store as well as a auto repair shop. While my wife pumped gas, I took pictures! What a team!!!

Waiting, waiting, waiting...

Little Man. David Hayes, 2013.

I am not a very patient person. It's like there are 106 days to Christmas and that's like one hundred and five days too long! We're told that our new row home will probably be ready in October...but I can't get a firm answer as to "early October?" "mid October?" "the end of October?" The wait and not knowing is driving me nuts! Same with waiting to find out if I will be getting a Brittany spaniel...I'm number 6 on a list for 6 dogs. If one of the puppies doesn't make it or the breeder decides to keep one of these for himself (...and no, I'm not working with a puppy mill!)...then I won't. Waiting, waiting, waiting...

Recipe for Little Man:
Camera Bag 2: Black & Color (Layer 1)
Mextures: Concrete Jungle (Overlay @ 100) (Layer 2)
Blender: Layer 1 + Layer 2 @ Overlay with mask
