Tracks. David Hayes, 2013

This scene greeted me several weeks ago whilst looking out my bedroom window first thing that morning. I don't know if the pattern making was any case just too good to pass up. Thought I'd share it with you on this last Monday of 2013. It's been a good year...looking forward to 2014. Happy New Year everyone!!

Paired. David Hayes, 2013

Christmas Day afternoon. A quiet has descended over the house. Our youngest daughter has gone wife is asleep on the couch, our puppy asleep on her bed. The house has been given a quick clean-up but nothing heavy duty. And I'm listening to "On Yoolis Night" by Anonymous 4. Now this is Christmas. A moment's peace...

Merry Christmas to one and all!

Pear.  David Hayes, 2013.

My, my. Christmas is just the day after tomorrow. Comes quicker the older you get...not quite ready for it. Mentally. Need to force myself to pause from all the planning, moving, and fretting I've been doing as of late...listen to some "good" Christmas music, drink more eggnog, and ponder the true meaning of Christmas. I know...I'll watch "A Charlie Brown Christmas". That always does the trick!

Myself - Within. David Hayes, 2013

This is the last in the series...source image is a black and white negative scanned into my iPhone5 using LomoScanner...processed further using PS Express, Photo Forge, and Laminar Pro. I'll let you decide the meaning(s) behind this image...

Herself - Within. David Hayes, 2013

Continuing with my explorations of mixing analog with iphoneography. I will have to admit that the source image wasn't the greatest...a little iColorama processing does wonders!

Myself. David Hayes, 2013

I continue to experiment both with selfies and mixing analog with iphonegraphy. The source image for this one is a black and white negative...scanned using the LomoScanner app...processed with iColorama and Snapseed.

Interesting image. I wonder what part of me I am expressing here....

Carnival #1. David Hayes, 2013

Carnival #2. David Hayes, 2013

Carnival #3. David Hayes, 2013

Two summers ago, while my wife and I were visiting Traverse City, MI, we came upon what was to become that year's Cherry Festival. We couldn't go on the grounds proper but did circle around the area taking shots with my then brand new Lomography Sprocket Rocket camera loaded with Kodak Ectachrome slide film. Once home, I put the roll into a drawer to be processed later...

That later became this past summer when I finally had enough rolls exposed to warrant putting together an E-6 kit to process them all. Once done, I slid them all into negative holders and...

The end of this story is this. I finally pulled these out, used my Lomo Film Scanner and app to "digitize" these into my iphone5. I then used the app AutoStitch to put the pieces together...and Snapseed to polish and fine tune. A lot of processing went into getting these images...can't say I'll do this often...but I do like how  these came out! Analog and Digital do play well together!

Winter's Dream. David Hayes, 2013

Winter's Dream is the companion piece to Sticks which I posted on Monday. Two different ways of looking at the same scene. Sticks went "Explorer" on Flickr yesterday...wouldn't it be great if this one did as well! Hmmm....

Winter's Grasses. David Hayes, 2013
Friday, December 6th.

We are all on high alert right now...expecting 5 to 7 inches of snow on top of freezing rain. In the Cincinnati area this is akin to a death sentence. And guess what? So far...nothing to speak of! Typical...

My "bird dog" puppy has her nose pressed against the sliding glass door, whining and whimpering...wanting to go out and play. I suppose I should finish up here and take her out...

Happy Friday everyone!

Mayflower Tea. David Hayes, 2013
This past Sunday we were able to take in the holiday weekend festivities in "Old" Milford...our new hometown. We rediscovered many of the fine antique shops that line Milford's streets...and discovered a great chocolate shop as well as a REAL coffee where you can buy bulk coffee beans right from the burlap bag they came in! I grabbed the snap that's the source image of "Mayflower Tea" during our explorations. Let see...first I'll hit the chocolate shop then head over the coffee shop...yeah. That's where you'll find me...

Rain. David Hayes, 2013.

I snapped this image sometime ago while still living at my old house. Tucked it away until now. Not that it reflects my mood at the moment...far from it. Just felt that it was it's time to be seen. Didn't do much to this image...just a little cropping to tighten up the composition. Simplicity at it's best...

Happy Monday everyone!

Milford. David Hayes, 2013

Friday, November 29th.

A bit of snow dusted the tree tops and roof tops the other day...took this one from an upstairs window. I haven't had a chance to do a photo shoot of my new town...I just need to make some time to go forth and do so...

November. David Hayes, 2013.

Wednesday, November 27th.

I had the pleasure of meeting a former student of mine for breakfast today. She's in town from Chicago visiting friends and family for the Thanksgiving holiday. We had a good visit...remembering things from when she was in my 6th grade classroom some 17 years ago. My young friend is doing glad she made time to see me...

Shade #27. David Hayes, 2013

Monday, November 25th.

Here's the newest version in my 40 Shades of A Park Bench series. This one was done entirely using Repix.

Slowly settling into our new place. Still trying to fit everything in...square peg/round hole sort of thing. Holidays coming so we'll be taking a bit of a breather....but so much yet to do...

Harmony. David Hayes, 2013

Friday, November 22.

Let me tell you...when you get's hard to get back on it again! Our move has everything in a thither...mix in a slowness in selling our house, car troubles and having to change health plans...and that evening glass of wine looks better and better. Might just become a late afternoon glass...or two...or three...

Even still, life is good! Happy Friday!!

Fall. David Hayes, 2013

Friday, November 1st.

A new beginning. Today. I picked up the keys to our new town home and after all the formalities with the agent, I stood in what will be our new great room. Feeling excited and overwhelmed. A new adventure. What fun!!

Wednesday, October 30th.

The quiet before the storm. Done everything that needs to be done before the BIG MOVE. Now...just waiting until Friday. It's the waiting that's the worse part. I could do more packing. Lots of that to do. Instead, I think I'll try to enjoy the quiet. Play with my puppy a little more...

Shade 25. David Hayes, 2013

So I said to Seth Apter, "Seth...send me a picture of a New York City park bench. Any bench. And I betcha I can come up with 40 different variations on that bench." So, Seth being who he is, sent me the most awful snap of a park bench. And, me being who I am, have been working on those 40 different variations, or shades, of that park bench.

In the past, I've only posted my results on my Flickr stream or in a FB album set-up in my Clearer Reflections page...and I will continue to do so. (If you haven't seen the prior "Shades" do check  them out at Flickr and/or FB!) I have also decided to start posting here as well!

Happy Monday, everyone!

Personality. David Hayes, 2013

Friday, October 25th.

I just finished writing a long rant about being taken advantage of as an artist...but after reading it over, I thought differently about publishing it. You all have been there. And I'm sure they felt they were doing me a favor by giving me a venue. I guess what really irks me is knowing that they will probably happily spend money at our local Target for wall hangings...

There....rant over. Have a happy Friday!!!

Quill.  David Hayes, 2013

Wednesday, October 23rd.

A cold, dreary October day. A good day to stay indoors...curled up with a good book. The puppy is asleep on her "kitchen bed", giving me a quiet moment or two. Classical music on my radio, cup of coffee at hand. Nice.

Found. David Hayes, 2013.

Monday, October 21st.

So...we got up early yesterday to get the house ready to show during an Open House...and finished with fifteen minutes to spare.
Put the dog carrier into the back of my car, the puppy into the carrier, us in the car...and the car wouldn't start! So...a quick swap over to my wife's car and off we went.

Every have days like that? I sure you have. The upside of all of this is that at least my car went down in the garage and not later when we were out...and it sounds like we have someone seriously considering our house.

Such is life. Today will be a good day...I just know it!

I Drink Alone. David Hayes, 2013.
Wednesday, October 16th.

In his later years my grandfather would always have a shot of Southern Comfort in his morning sweeten it. At the time my grandmother tolerated this you see he was dying from cancer.

Earlier this year my grandmother asked me if I wanted this bottle of Old Grand-Dad. It's a very old bottle with just a little still in it. Teasing her, I asked her had she enjoyed the rest of the bottle. She became very serious...and here's the rest of the story. Seems this bottle belonged to my great grandfather's father. Upon my great grandfather's death, my grandfather brought the bottle home. He never opened it...and neither have I. That one last shot memory of the great grandfather I never knew...and my grandfather who I did...

If you know of anybody who is trying to sell their house, pack for a move...and all that goes with both...and then tells you that they're going to get a new everything you can to convince them to wait on the puppy. Either that or buy them a case of wine. They'll need it...

"Over". David Hayes, 2013

Wednesday, October 9th.

The test of wills is just beginning. Between my puppy and I. I brain tells me what I need to be doing and what should be happening...but my heart just wants to enjoy her being a puppy. So I guess it's more of a test of balance. To be a kid again with a new puppy...and let mom and dad deal with the "serious" stuff...

Finally. David Hayes, 2013.

Friday, October 4th.

It's all coming together. Our downsizing. The new town home is gorgeous and we're all set to move in on the first of November. Listed our current home last night...showings are already we're hoping for a fast sell. Picking up my new puppy on Sunday...

In a way...all of this feels like Christmas. Lots and lots of effort that comes together all at once...and happens quickly when it's time...

Let me tell you about it... David Hayes, 2013

Wednesday, October 2nd.

Actually I did compose this piece on Friday, September 13th. But that's another story. And...if you want to get technical about it, I shot the source image some 25+ years ago with a Minolta SR201 camera using Ektachrome slide film. Rediscovered the slide...scanned it...and composed in my iPad. Now's how's that for a story!!

The changing of seasons. Changes in direction. Seem to go together. Fall is for me, the best time of the year. A time of gearing down...of contemplation...a time to make changes if need be. A good time of year.

Happy Friday everyone!

Letting go...a little at a time.

Michigan Harvest. David Hayes, 2013

This has been coming for some time actually. I gave myself a taste of it in August. Pulled back...didn't post. Looked...relooked at different ways. Liked what I saw, yet the more I saw, the less I liked...

I've become disenchanted with the increasing "eliteism" and "snobbery" surrounding iphoneography. It's gotten to the point that unless you use certain apps a certain way...or a particular iDevice...that you can't be a member of this tribe. And if you dare think about using any "other" digital technology to create an can't play! All well and good...but I don't want to be a part of this anymore.

Digital technology has made photography the most democratic of all arts. Being of the old school who still loves the smell of fix, I think this is absolutely the way it should be. The flip side to this is the fact that this very same technology has given everyone an easy way to share their "reality" with everyone else...whether you want to see it or not. Have you taken a hard look at the "stats" on the various social sharing sites? The amount of images downloaded everyday is mind boggling!

I am also troubled about the increasing monetarizing of our images by the likes of Facebook, Instagram, and others. One one side, I do believe we should have to "pay to play" yet the fact that I have no choice on how/what/where my images will be used is unsettling.

I guess where I'm going with all of this is that I have decided to slowly let go of all the usual and popular avenues...and to seek out places that are more meaningful and relevant to where myself and my art is going. And perhaps a little less crowded. Should be interesting...I hope you come along for this part of my journey!

Hay Field. David Hayes, 2013
Fall arrived promises to be fall like...warm, crisp air....clear sky. It couldn't have come soon enough...fall. While we had a mild summer, fall is my favorite time of year! Time to put away the bikini's and flip flops...and get out the flannels and boots! (I do admit that I will miss summer's bikinis....)

Hay Field is part of a series I shot up in Michigan this past August. Even though it was at the height of summer, the morning I took this one and the others that I will share this week had a fall feel to it. So when it came time to do my post-shoot work, I had to go with that! I hope you enjoy these.

From The Ashes.

From the Ashes. David Hayes, 2013.

This is the last in the series of three that I've been spotlighting this week. I took a bit of a painterly look for this one. Liked the idea of mixing a grungy image with a more romantic feel. And why not?

I'm not going to give the recipe for this least not here. Instead, I invite you to visit Create Mixed Media's web site where my tutorial on how I created this image has just been posted. (If you do visit CMM, please leave a comment so they know you've been there...and how much you like my work...things like that! Thanks!!)

Everyone have a great weekend...happy Friday!!
