A Recommendation

I am a lover and collector of stories...folk tales, myths, Cinderella stories, Ark stories, creation stories, Jack Tales, Irish, Native American, African American, etc. etc. etc. (I used to be a "storyteller" but that's a different story...) I don't "collect" as actively as I used to do, but I'm always on the look out for a good story. A while ago, a good friend of mine recommended Salman Rushdie's book, Haroun and the Sea of Stories as she knew about this interest of mine. This turned out to be a frolicking adventure and a grand story.

Last week I was combing my local library branch looking for a good story and found Rushdie's newest book, Luka and the Fire of Life. I finished this last night and must say this turned out to be another grand story! This is about Haroun's younger brother's, Luka, adventures... chock full of adventure and references to all the old stories, myths, and  turns of the tongue. A wonderful read!!! I particularly like Rushdie's discussion of Time towards the end of the book. Here's part of that: "...There are those of us who learn to live completely in the moment. For such people the Past vanishes and the Future loses meaning. There is only the Present, which means that two of the three Aalim (elements of Time...) are surplus to the requirements...." An interesting outlook on life and time...

This is a fun book....do give it a read!
